Michael Finnigan
The son of an Irish operatic tenor, singing, to Michael, is as natural an activity as talking. And he can talk! Such ease and natural musicality has been evident in his work since he began his career as a child actor/singer in Sydney, Australia, in theatre, commercials, film and TV. With his impressive vocal range and glorious falsetto, Michael's improvisations glide effortlessly through a song, always inflected with a soulful tinge. This is not your music- college jazz-by-numbers routine but a personalized mix of influences from Stevie Wonder and Al Jarreau through to Mel Torme, Bobby McFerrin and Mark Murphy. Honing his craft in Sydney and in South-East Asia in the 1980’s Michael played in numerous reggae, funk, soul and jazz bands. He also wrote and recorded jingles and worked as a successful session singer, touring and recording with such respected Australian and Oz-based artists as Rolf Harris, Marcia Hines, Skunk Baxter, Venetta Fields, Barry Leef, Shauna Jenson, Mark Williamson and Doug Parkinson. Since relocating to the UK in 2001 he has become a regular voice on the London jazz scene, singing at venues such as the 606 Club, Pizza on the Park and Ronnie Scotts. He has also worked in the Middle East and in Europe, notably on Hungarian Television with the vocal group ”The Cotton Club Singers”. He continues to write and perform his own material alongside session singing and corporate work. In addition, he teaches a vocal masterclass at Richmond Adult Community College, London, where he constantly challenges his students to “sing outside the box”. He is also available to teach privately.
